5 Tips to Keepin' it Healthy

When it comes to hair, we all want the same thing. Beautiful, breath-taking hair. We want to look like we are walking straight out of a hair commercial, with those shiny, luscious locks, perfectly wafting in the wind. Am I right?

As hair artists, our main focus is creating that feeling, that end goal, for each of our guests. But that end goal is so much more than the perfect color and cut. It’s more about keeping my guest’s natural hair healthy. You can have the best cut or color in the world, but if your hair’s health isn’t great, that color or cut will fall flat.

Steps to great hair health happens outside the salon in our everyday routines. So let’s talk about what you can do to strengthen your hair health and keep it strong in between your appointments.

#1 – Have a wash schedule AND a weekly treatment schedule.

It’s important to schedule your home care treatments. Consistency is key here. Adding in a hair treatment once a week will help target your hair concerns, whether it’s repairing damage, protecting your color, reducing frizz, or soothing your scalp.

It can be confusing to determine where a hair treatment fits into your routine, but there are 2 main types of treatment: reconstructive and moisturizing. Reconstructive treatments repair from the inside out. Moisturizing treatments help combat concerns like frizz by locking in moisture.

No matter what your hair concerns are, make time to treat your hair each week and add in that extra love. The results will always be worth it.

#2 – Be gentle with your hair.

Don’t pull your hair back in tight ponytails. Tight ponytails can lead to hair breakage and damage. The constant tension on your hair follicles can weaken them over time, causing your hair to become brittle and prone to damage. Pivot into using clips or Tellities that are softer on your hair.

#3 – Always use a Heat Protectant

Heat protectants add an extra barrier between your hair and your styling tool, sealing in moisture and fending off frizz. Without the right preparation, your hair can start looking and feeling dry, frizzy, and damaged.

#4 – Never go to bed with a wet scalp.

A healthy scalp is crucial for healthy hair. You can’t have one without the other. And when it comes to sleeping with a wet scalp, think of it like leaving a wet towel on the floor all night. Leaving that moisture in to just sit can cause build up and that lovely dirty hair smell. Now, going to bed with wet hair every once in a while isn’t the issue, but making it a habit can work against all those other steps you are doing to keep your hair and scalp healthy.

#5 – Take advantage of today’s new technology & use a nighttime repair product. This is one of our favorite steps because it’s about working smarter, not harder. Using products that work while you sleep is a no brainer. With Aveda, there are multiple products you can add to your routine easily to ensure your morning hair is healthy.
