Real Talk about a Woman-Owned Business

Jamie Long, owner and founder of Cultivate Hair Salon

Ever wonder what’s happening behind the scenes of a woman-owned business?

It’s not always rainbows and butterflies. Full transparency…it’s a lot of moving parts that pull and tug you in different directions all the time.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you are losing your mind, but it also brings such a deep sense of purpose into your life.

You constantly feel like you are problem-solving, strategizing and overthinking, trying to read the minds of your clientele, your family, and your team. But it also sparks something in you that can’t be stifled. It drives you, fulfills you, and brings so much happiness and connection into your life. It can feel like walking on a tight wire, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because the reward is so precious. Knowing that I'm making a difference and having the opportunity to share my gift with others is a beautiful thing.

I wear many hats outside and inside of my business. I’m first and foremost a mother and wife. I’m an artist that loves to create, share, and connect. I’m a leader that educates and guides a team. A forever learner, dedicated to cultivating my own growth. And a businesswoman, doing and learning all the behind-the-scenes work. There are days and weeks that I know I’m killing it…and other weeks I feel like everything is killing me.

I am proud of my work and many accomplishments, yet somehow, I crave more. I want to keep pushing forward. To show my daughters they can do this and be better than I’ve ever dreamed of. I choose to lead. I choose to run my business on my terms and timeline. This is me. This is the business I run. This is the example I choose to leave.

If this sounds familiar to you, then I want you to know that you are not alone. I see you. I feel you. I find my power and motivation in many ways, and one of those paths is by surrounding myself with like-minded women. Women who are doing it all and have a deep desire to create, build, and uplift. It’s doesn’t mean we aren’t tired…because we are!! But it means finding your purpose amid the fatigue and pushing forward.

I feel inspired when I see women-owned businesses thrive and reach their goals, no matter the size. I fully believe that we can go much further when we support one another rather than tear down. There’s room at the table for everyone and we can help each other on our journeys towards success.

So from one business owner to another, just know you are not alone, and you can always reach out. This journey can be tiresome but with help, it’s totally doable. You got this! We got this! Find your people, push through the pain, and let’s build something we are all proud of. Let's cultivate our dreams!
